Megan and Harrison’s intimate wedding at The Jane Eyre, Chorlton

An intimate Manchester wedding that felt completely like them.

Some weddings don't need to be big to feel important.

They don't need hundreds of guests, a huge venue or a day packed with traditions. Sometimes, all you really need is the people you love, somewhere that feels like you, and enough space to enjoy being together. Megan and Harrison's wedding was exactly that.

Their day began with a church ceremony in Chorlton before moving to The Jane Eyre on Beech Road for an intimate reception with the people closest to them.

It was relaxed.

It was personal.

And, most importantly, it felt like them.

There was no sense that they were trying to create a wedding that looked like somebody else's. They'd created a day around what mattered to them, and that made it incredibly easy to photograph. Because when a wedding feels natural, the photographs tend to feel natural too. We didn't want to turn Megan and Harrison's wedding into a photoshoot. We wanted them to spend the day with their people. To enjoy the ceremony. To eat, drink and laugh together and to have photographs that brought all of those things back.

A Chorlton church ceremony filled with the people they love

There's something particularly lovely about starting an intimate wedding somewhere local. The day doesn't need to feel like a production. People arrive, they say hello. There's that familiar mixture of excitement and nerves and gradually, everyone settles into the feeling that this is actually happening.

For Megan and Harrison, the ceremony was the beginning of the story.

The anticipation beforehand.

The people waiting for them.

The little reactions as everything unfolded.

And then that moment when they were finally standing together, surrounded by the people who mattered most.

These are the parts of a wedding where we tend to step back and simply watch.

We're looking at Megan and Harrison, but we're also looking around them. At their family. Their friends. The people watching. The little reactions that they won't necessarily have seen themselves. Because when you're getting married, you're obviously experiencing what's happening in front of you - you're not able to see everything that's happening behind you. And that's where documentary wedding photography becomes so valuable.

We can be paying attention to all of it.

The big moments are important but so are the little ones happening around them.

From the church to The Jane Eyre

Once the ceremony was over, the atmosphere changed. The nerves started to disappear and the day became more about celebrating.

There were hugs.

Conversations.

Laughter.

People catching up.

And that feeling you get when everyone realises there's still a whole day ahead of them.

That's one of our favourite transitions to photograph.

The formal part is over, but the story is only really getting started and rather than immediately pulling Megan and Harrison away for photographs, we let them enjoy it. They had people to talk to. People to hug. People they'd perhaps not seen for a long time. And that's exactly where we wanted them to be - with their people. Because your wedding day shouldn't be spent constantly being taken away from the people you've invited to share it with you.

An intimate wedding reception at The Jane Eyre, Chorlton

The Jane Eyre was a brilliant setting for the next part of the day. There's something about an intimate wedding reception that works particularly well in a place with its own personality. You don't need to fill a huge room. You don't need to create atmosphere from scratch - the people create it.

The conversations.

The food and drinks.

The laughter.

The little groups of people settling into the day.

The way everyone starts to relax as the afternoon goes on.

And The Jane Eyre gave Megan and Harrison a space that felt much more like a celebration with their favourite people than a traditional wedding production.

That's what we loved about it. The wedding didn't feel like it was happening at a venue. It felt like everyone had simply come together to celebrate Megan and Harrison. And that's an important difference. Because when you're photographing an intimate wedding, there are fewer places to hide. Everything feels closer, the conversations are easier to hear, the reactions are more obvious and the people around you become an even bigger part of the story.

A little time together for Megan & Harrison

Even with an intimate wedding, we always like to find a little time for the two of you.

Not hours.

Not a long list of poses.

Just enough time to step away from everything for a few minutes.

For Megan and Harrison, this was an opportunity to breathe and spend a little time together in the middle of a very full day. We gave them some gentle direction, found some beautiful light and let them simply be together.

That's how we approach natural wedding portraits.

You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need to perform for the camera. And you certainly don't need to spend your wedding day standing in one position while we take photograph after photograph.

We'll guide you when it helps.

We'll find the good light.

We'll look for interesting surroundings.

And then we'll let you interact naturally.

Sometimes we'll create something a little more considered. Sometimes we'll simply walk. And sometimes the best photograph comes from giving you a moment and letting you forget we're there.

The aim is always the same:

Natural wedding portraits.

Beautiful light.

Still completely you.

Two photographers, more of the story

Having two photographers is particularly useful on a wedding like Megan and Harrison's because there are always multiple things happening at once. One of us can stay with Megan and Harrison while the other watches everything happening around them.

One can photograph the couple while the other notices a reaction from a family member. One can stay close during a conversation while the other steps back and photographs the atmosphere of the room. Even at an intimate wedding, there are two stories happening at once.

There's what you're experiencing and there's everything happening around you.

We don't want you to have to choose between those things. We want you to be able to enjoy your wedding knowing that we'll be paying attention to the rest. Because sometimes the story isn't happening in front of you.

It's happening just over your shoulder.

The details that made their day theirs

One of the lovely things about an intimate wedding is how much the smaller details can become part of the story.

The things you've chosen because you like them.

The food.

The flowers.

The drinks.

The little details around the room.

The people sitting together.

The things that might seem insignificant on the day but become part of your memory of it - we photograph those things too.

Not because we want to create a catalogue of wedding details, but because they help tell the story.

A photograph of the room before everyone arrives. The table once everyone is sitting around it. The first drink. A detail that you spent time choosing. The little things that, together, make the day yours. And then, once the room is full of people, those details become much less important than the life happening around them. Which is exactly how it should be.

An intimate Manchester wedding without the traditional rules

There's something we really love about weddings like Megan and Harrison's. They prove that you don't need to follow every traditional wedding rule to have a day that feels incredibly special.

You don't need a huge guest list.

You don't need hours of photographs.

You don't need a rigid timeline.

You don't need to spend the day being told where to stand.

You can simply build a wedding around the things that matter to you.

Your people.

Your food.

Your music.

Your surroundings.

Your story.

And then actually enjoy it.

That's what we mean when we talk about relaxed wedding photography. It doesn't mean we don't care about making beautiful photographs. We absolutely do. It means we don't think beautiful photographs should come at the expense of having a good wedding day. Our job is to fit around the day you've created. Not the other way around.
