Jess & Thane’s wedding at lodore falls in the Lake District
A Lake District wedding that never needed to become a photoshoot.
Some weddings feel like they were made for the Lake District. Jess and Thane's wedding at Lodore Falls was one of those days. Surrounded by the landscape of Borrowdale and Derwentwater, their wedding had everything you might hope for from a Lake District celebration.
Beautiful surroundings.
People they loved.
Plenty of laughter.
Quiet moments.
And a day that felt completely like them.
But what stood out most to us wasn't simply the setting. It was how present Jess and Thane were throughout the day. They weren't constantly thinking about photographs. They weren't worrying about where they needed to stand next, they were just enjoying their wedding. And that's exactly how we wanted to photograph it.
For us, documentary wedding photography isn't about ignoring the couple or never giving any direction. It's about making sure the photography fits around the wedding, rather than making the wedding fit around the photography.
A Lodore Falls wedding that felt completely like them
Before we even arrived at Lodore Falls, we'd already spent time getting to know Jess and Thane - that's something we really value.
Because when we know a little more about you, we're not just photographing two people we've met on the morning of their wedding. We have a better understanding of what matters to you. The people you want around you, the kind of experience you want from your photographs and, perhaps most importantly, how you want to feel on the day.
For Jess and Thane, the wedding wasn't about creating a series of perfect moments for the camera. It was about being together, being with their family and friends, enjoying the day, and letting everything happen naturally.
We're not constantly thinking:
Where can we take a nice photograph?
We're thinking:
What's happening here?
Who is involved?
What's about to happen?
Where is the light?
And is there something happening that Jess and Thane might want to remember?
That's where so many of our favourite photographs come from.
Wedding photography without taking over the day
One of the biggest concerns we hear from couples is that they'll spend their wedding day being photographed.
We understand. You want beautiful photographs but you also want to actually enjoy your wedding.
You want to talk to your guests.
You want to spend time with your family.
You want to be present for everything you've spent months planning.
That's why our approach is deliberately relaxed.
Most of the day, we simply watch.
We're looking for the moments happening naturally around us rather than constantly asking Jess and Thane to stop what they're doing.
A glance.
A laugh.
Someone reaching for their hand.
A reaction from a parent.
A friend making them laugh.
A quiet moment between the two of them.
The things that happen when nobody is performing for the camera. That's documentary wedding photography to us. It's not about standing back and doing nothing. It's about paying attention, anticipating, knowing when to move closer, knowing when to stay where you are and knowing when the best thing we can do is leave a moment completely alone.
Two photographers, more of the story
Having two photographers gives us another advantage.
We don't have to choose between photographing the couple and photographing everything happening around them. One of us can stay close to Jess and Thane while the other sees what's happening somewhere else.
Their parents.
Their friends.
The reactions they couldn't see themselves.
The little moments happening across the room.
The things that happen while the couple are busy experiencing their own wedding.
That's one of the reasons we love working as a two photographer team. You don't have to choose between being present and having those moments photographed. We're able to tell a much fuller story without asking you to spend more time in front of the camera. And when you look back through your photographs, you get more than just a collection of photographs of yourselves. You get a sense of what everyone else was doing too.
Photographing a wedding at Lodore Falls
There are some wedding venues where you have to work quite hard to find an interesting background.
Lodore Falls isn't one of them.
One of the things we love about photographing a wedding at Lodore Falls is that the landscape doesn't need to be forced into the photographs.
It's already there.
The mountains.
The lake.
The woodland.
The gardens.
The changing light.
The sense of being surrounded by the Lake District.
We simply let it become part of the story.
The landscape shouldn't overpower the people in the photographs. It should give them a sense of place. A reminder of where they were. A little piece of the day that brings everything back. Sometimes the best photograph might be a wide shot that shows the scale of the landscape around the couple. And sometimes it's a much smaller moment where the landscape is barely noticeable - both can belong in the same wedding story.
Lake District wedding portraits, without the awkward posing
When it comes to couple portraits, we do give a little direction. We think that's important. You shouldn't have to know what to do in front of a camera or spend ages learning poses and you definitely shouldn't have to spend a huge part of your wedding day standing in one place while someone takes photographs.
Instead, we'll find somewhere that works.
Beautiful light.
An interesting part of the landscape.
A quiet corner of the venue.
And then we'll give you something simple to do.
A walk.
A little time together.
Maybe a change of position.
Sometimes we'll create a more considered editorial portrait. Other times we'll simply let you interact naturally. The aim is always the same.
Natural wedding portraits.
Beautiful light.
Still completely you.
That's the balance we're looking for.
Enough direction that you feel comfortable. Enough freedom that the photographs don't feel forced.
Planning a wedding at Lodore Falls?
If you're planning a wedding at Lodore Falls, one of the things we'd say is don't feel like you need to turn the Lake District into a backdrop for a photoshoot.
It's already there. The landscape is incredible. The venue has its own character. And your wedding already has a story. You just need someone paying attention to it.
We're Manchester based wedding photographers, photographing relaxed, natural and emotionally driven weddings across the Lake District, the UK and beyond.
If you're looking for wedding photography that lets you actually enjoy your wedding, we'd love to hear your story.
Come as you are. We'll take it from there.
Looking for a Lake District wedding photographer?
Whether you're planning an intimate wedding at Lodore Falls, a larger celebration somewhere else in the Lake District, or a wedding that doesn't quite fit into a traditional template, our approach stays the same.
We're there to photograph the people you love.
The atmosphere.
The landscape.
The little moments.
The big ones.
And everything that happens in between.
We'll give you a little direction when it helps.
We'll create beautiful portraits when the moment calls for it.
But most of the time, we'll simply let you get on with being married.
Because years from now, we hope you won't just remember what your wedding looked like.
We hope you'll remember how it felt.
More of the people you love. Less time away from them.
